El Toro would be a fairly nondescript coastal town (except for several impressive villas in frontline that sit high up on the steep rock walls) with simple, small houses that line the coastal strip in rows of three or four. If it had not been for Port Adriano and the adjacent 250 metre sandy beach it would be the focus of attention. Although the port has existed since the 1970s, it was of only regional importance, until it was converted in 2006 at a cost of EUR 90 million by the operating company Ocibar and architect Philippe Starck into a modern, avant-garde marina. In 2012 this then “completely different" port opened: cool design, extra class berths for boats and yachts, shipbrokers and shipyard representatives, upscale restaurants, galleries and plenty of shopping. The village of Calvia is the centre of the same name municipality of Calvia, which extends from the towns of Paguera in the west to Cas Catala in the east and as far as the outskirts of Palma. The urbanization Sol de Mallorca is a somewhat remote locality that lies half way between Palma and Santa Ponsa and is accessed via a wooded country road. What Arenal and Playa de Palma is to the German tourists then so is Magaluf and Palma Nova to the British, Dutch and Scandinavians, the only difference being that instead of German bars there are pubs with snooker tables. Cala Major, which merges almost seamlessly into the municipality of Palma, was at the start of tourism on the island, one of the most sought after holiday destinations. This also bears witness due to the many older hotels on the seafront, which is the largest beach in Palma (hence the name Cala Major). The small, sleepy seaside town of San Telmo is located on the west coast of Majorca in the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains. It can be reached, along a winding road that runs from Andratx to S`Arraco. The small street that runs through the village of S`Arraco has retained much of its original charm, because it was in the main, spared from the "blessings" of tourism. Records show that in the 13th century this was the place, that the conqueror Jaime I anchored with his fleet before he arrived to neighbouring San Telmo. The construction of the church, which is known for its carillon, commenced in 1704 as a small chapel. Numerous houses along the main street are evidence that many residents were quite wealthy. They are richly decorated; some in the Art Nouveau (in Spain "Modernismo") style and speak of the bourgeois status of their former residents. This was due to the fact that in the 19th century some families emigrated from S`Arraco to France, where they started businesses and trades. Today S`Arraco has about 1000 residents as the locals have been joined by foreign artists and artisans who love the place because of its originality. The charming village of Andratx is located about 5 km from the coast and the port of the same name. At the beginning of the 15th century Mallorca was under constant threat from pirates, and the distance between the village and the harbour made it difficult for pirates to retreat. The village is characterised by its narrow streets with houses that are in some cases, more than 100 years old and which now play host to restaurants and small shops. Just off the main road and on the outskirts, there are new buildings; however they do not blend harmoniously into the local surroundings. The village has a good selection of shops for everyday requirements but the gastronomic offer is rather modest. Once a week, on Wednesdays, there is a weekly market. The former noble residence "Palau de Son Mas" following modernisation now acts as the town hall. Paguera with its three beaches Palmira, Tora and de la Romana was invented for tourists. There was no other reason - no harbour and no places of interest. Thus Paguera is a very touristy place, which is visited, both in peak as well as off season, mostly by German tourists. After the construction of a bypass, the main road above the beaches was converted to a pedestrian zone - now called Bulevar de Paguera – and traffic is allowed only in extreme circumstances. North of Palma is the charming village of Alaro which sits at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana, and is recognised as a Unesco World Cultural Heritage site since 2011. It is dominated by the 825 metre high Puig d `Alaro with its fortress, which due to its steep altitude was considered impregnable for centuries. In Arab times, the Moors fought fighting for eight years to maintain occupancy of the castle. After the re-conquest of Mallorca by the Christians in 1229, the castle fell back into the hands of the Christians in 1231. A macabre story is told in 1285: The King Alfonso II of Aragon was at that time carrying out a punitive expedition against his uncle Jaume II, who was at the time king of Mallorca, and also wanted to conquer the castle of Alaro. The soldiers of Jaume II fought bitterly, led by the officers Guillem Cabrit and Guillem Bassa. Both were captured by Alfonso II’s soldiers and were impaled and roasted alive. Their graves are now found in Palma‘s Cathedral.

Only 14 km northeast of Palma is the tranquil market town of Santa Maria del Cami, in short, Santa Maria. Llucmajor is the main town in the municipal borough of Llucmajor and lies approximately 15kms from the airport and the coastline.
Excavations prove that the region was already populated in the 3rd century BC. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans have left a few traces. Llucmajor gained a certain importance following the re-conquest of Majorca in 1229 by Jaime I. In 1259 the first church was built. In 1300 the town was named "Villa" by Jaime II - King of Mallorca. The "Battle of Llucmajor" took place in 1349, during which Pedro IV defeated his cousin, King Jaime III, which ended the kingdom of Mallorca and his grave can be found in Palma Cathedral.

Cala Pi is a holiday resort in the bay of the same name. The village, with its surrounding areas, stretches from the Torre de Cala Pi, a historic 16th century watchtower built to protect against North African corsairs, to the Torrent de Sa Punta de Sa Dent where it meets Vallgornera urbanization. A visit to the Torre de Cala Pi is worthwhile, because from here you have a fantastic view of the rocky coastline and the picturesque bay. The urbanization Cala Pi is a purely a holiday resort, which is inhabited mainly during the summer months. There is hardly any infrastructure. There are some small restaurants and cafes most of which are only open during the summer season. Sa Rapita was originally a small fishing village on the south coast of Majorca. It was largely spared from the influence of mass tourism, so that it has preserved its old charm. Colonia de Sant Jordi is an old fishing village on the south coast of Majorca, which is important not for fishing, but for the saline salt production. Even the Phoenicians around 600 BC as well as the Romans harvested salt here. Narrow canals, which extend far into the hinterland, characterise the landscape; a part of which is now designated as a nature reserve. The "Flor de Sal" company, which has become widely known far beyond the island, is also located here. The simple sea salt is skimmed and dried by hand. It has 16-fold magnesium content and double the amount of calcium as usual salt. Finally it is refined with aromas and is now traded on the markets and in delicatessens as a "luxury food".
Today, the village is a highly frequented holiday resort with about 3,000 inhabitants. The small town of Campos lies 10 km inland and is the political and administrative centre for the municipal borough of the same name. The old part of the town comprises two storey village houses which are built of porous sandstone known locally as ‘mares’ and which is sourced from the nearby quarry San Gorau. Some of the buildings are reminiscent of Roman Times such as the manor house Es Pulmar and the thermal baths San Joan de Font Sana, the only source of hot mineral water on the island. Santanyi is a market town in the southeast of Majorca and is also the political and administrative centre of the municipality of the same name. As early as 1300, the town was granted city rights by King Jaume II. Porto Colom lies in a sheltered bay on the east coast of Majorca and has the largest natural harbour on the island. Porto Colom is mentioned in historical documents as early as the 13th century, because wine produced in Felanitx was shipped overseas. The name of the town is derived from Christopher Columbus, who discovered America and who according to many academics is believed to have hailed from Felanitx, but the last piece of the puzzle to prove this is missing. Porto Colom is a picturesque fishing port where today the Majorcan fishing boats (Llaüts) anchor. Porto Cristo is a port on the east coast of Majorca with a natural bay and just 13 km from Manacor. Because of its location, Porto Cristo has always served as the port for Manacor. The port can refer to a thousand year old settlement and the caves were in use during the Talayotic period. Other historical discoveries also confirm the presence of the Romans in this area as a few remains of an early Christian basilica with a baptismal font dating from the 5th century were found. However the village was not occupied until 1888.
Porto Cristo nestles around the entire bay of Cala Manacor and has an attractive marina and mooring for tourist ships. The village of Porreres is located south of the motorway that runs from Palma to Manacor. On warm summer days the village with its narrow streets and windows, with houses that always have the shutters closed, seems to be in hibernation.
